Physical Education Tentative Events and Competitions

M-DCPS/ AHA Team Jump Rope Extravaganza
This two day overnight event is scheduled for January 15 & 16, 2009 and will be held at Miami Lakes Education Center [Gymnasium]. All elementary and middle school physical education teachers, parents and students are invited. This event will provide all participants an opportunity to learn basic to advanced rope jumping skills while learning the benefits of a healthy active lifestyle.

Kid Fit Challenge
This event is held in the North January 27, 2009 at Flamingo Elementary and in the South January 28, 2009 at Sunset Park Elementary. Each elementary school will select one boy and one girl to compete against others students in 7 skills related activity stations.

Football Mania Competition
This after school event is scheduled for February 4, 2009 for students in grades 2 – 5. Each interested school will select 1 or 2 boy[s] and 1 or 2 girl[s] to represent their school at the District competition held at Emerson Elementary.

Family Fitness Fun Night
This evening event is scheduled for April 8, 2009 at Springview Elementary and will provide an opportunity for elementary parents and students to participate in numerous skills related fun activities.

USA [AAU] Jump Rope Region 13 Tournament
This event is scheduled for April 18, 2009 at Dade Christian School [Gymnasium]. Students from various Rope Jumping teams will compete in a variety of skill related individual and partner skills. The location of Dade Christian School is (6601 NW 167th ST., Miami.

M-DCPS Team Jump Rope Competition
This team competition is scheduled for May 6, 2009 at Miami Springs Senior and is divided into three levels A, B, and C. This event allows all interested students the opportunity to compete at their own developmentally appropriate skill level. Each team shall consist of a minimum of four members and a maximum of 10.

Dolphins Junior Training Camp
The Miami Dolphins Junior Training Camp personnel will travel to selected elementary and middle schools and provide an opportunity for 200 students per school to rotate through five football skills stations.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day
The National Girls and Women in Sports Day, initiated in 1987, was a day dedicated to the memory of Olympic Volleyball Player Flo Hyman, for her athletic achievements and her work to ensure equality for women's sports. Since that time, the NGWSD has evolved into a day to remember the past and recognize current sports achievements and the positive influence of sports participation.


Secondary Events

Model Physical Education Program
The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and the Florida Marlins sponsor this yearly event recognizing outstanding physical education programs throughout the state.

Sport-Tech Program
Sport-Tech is a pilot program that integrates reading, writing, research and communication skills with technology. It has been piloted in several middle schools over the past year with much success. Students cooperatively work together on a "research" project about a sport and put it all together in a multimedia presentation.
